dianec42: Joshua tree against a blue sky (Dragon Boat 3)
Today we had the dragon boat finals. The actual racing went well, just not quite well enough. We had lots of energy and lots of endurance. We are definitely getting better. However, both our results were just outside of the medal zone... in the corporate final we needed to finish third, but finished fourth; and in the mixed consolation race, we needed to finish first, but finished second.

Unfortunately there was a bit of a mix-up, and Alex (our coach) told us that the fourth place in corporate was enough to get us a medal. So we got to stay a few extra hours, and stand around in crowds and chaos for 45 minutes, and I got to fight my way through the crowd for when they called our name... only they never called it! I had to talk to 3 or 4 people to find out what was going on. I was most put out. I'm also upset for the team - our hopes were raised, for nothing.

Luckily I'm about to have a few weeks' break from both dragon boating and the team. I think I'm going to need it.

We did surprisingly well in our first mixed-division race (3rd) and shockingly well in our first corporate race(*) (2nd place, less than a second behind DPW and more than 10 seconds ahead of whoever finished third). Our mixed result (har har) put us into the higher division, so we didn't do quite so well in the next race -- okay, we came in last, but we were gaining on the 5th-place boat at the end, sigh.

Today we have one more race in each division. For mixed it's still technically possible for us to get a medal, but only if we come in first. For corporate... well, there are 3 medals, we're in the top 6 teams, and we did really well yesterday. I think we've got a pretty good chance there.

Oh, and apparently I'm calling in the corporate race this morning. Should be entertaining. It's been about a year since I've done that; hopefully I can remember what to say & what order to say it all in. :P

(*) considering who were were in with -- "Who's that next to us? Oh expletive, it's DPW, we're SO doomed...."

Races!

Long Beach dragon boat races are coming up in a week's time:
http://www.lbdragonboat.com/

I'll be there, with the big happy dysfunctional family that is the Alpine team. We may even have a tent, and food & water. Whee!

Dragon boat practice has been cancelled today due to thunderstorms. The sun just came out here.

In other news, it's hilarious that the iPhone makes an instant-messenger noise when you get a text message. Imagine two really sleepy people poking all the computers in the house at 8 AM trying to figure out where the hell the noise is coming from...

I've been doing a little more stitching on the Art Deco Lady of Dooooooom. Next time, I will get to use a 4th shade of purple! Whee!

I've also been taking afternoon walks around the block a little more often. For a while I felt guilty about getting out of the office for 20 minutes during working hours, but everybody's doing it (including my lead and my manager!) so apparently it's just the done thing. It's also an excellent chance to talk to myself without anyone looking at me strangely or interrupting me with work issues, so occasionally I manage to gain a little perspective on the whole work drama thing and the need to rise above that. (-:

I've scored a 2-week free pass to a different gym (Bally's). It's not ridiculously far away, and the parking situ is reportedly workable. We'll see about the actual facilities, hours etc. I have GOT to get myself a membership in a gym that's actually pleasant to go to. (I also have a line on a cheap "in" at LA Fitness but have been too lame to look up their nearest location.)

Dragon boat coup is still incomplete (need to locate our current captain so we can depose him properly). Our coach says he's cooled down a bit and isn't actually going to kick our butts. I asked if he could just kick S. and K.'s butts anyway, and spare mine. :P

Yesterday I got up far too early to go to dragon boat practice, the first of the season. Yay, we succeeded in having a practice. We had enough people to move a small boat, and we even ran into our ex-coach and sweet-talked her into coming out and coaching us. (Which was good, because we didn't actually have a plan for what we were going to do once we got on the boat.) Our fearless captain remembered the big folder o waivers, and is certified to steer, without which it would have been a really short practice. So yay, I didn't even have to kill anybody.

I'm still worried and think we should be doing more recruiting. If we're having this much trouble rounding up 10 people to have practice, it's going to be an utter joy trying to round up 20 so we can have a race. :P

Meanwhile, my darling husband had been trying in vain to start the crappy old lawn mower that came with the house. So once I got home & had lunch, we went shopping. We came home from Lowes with a lawn mower, a new leaf blower/sucker, and a weed whacker. Much yard work ensued (as well as laundry and dishwashing).

We tried valiantly to stay awake through the Malaysian Grand Prix. I think [livejournal.com profile] stuartc even succeeded. I definitely dozed off a few times. Apparently no one ran into Kubica's car this time, and he came in second after Raikonnen. Huzzah!

Today we slept in. More yard work and washing of things happened today. [livejournal.com profile] stuartc cleaned up the garage a bit, and we took down the Christmas lights.

Zoot (a.k.a. Tiny Kitten) has been in some sort of snit the past couple of days. She's currently attacking the inside of the couch directly underneath me. We dragged her out from under the bed this morning to verify that she's still breathing, not injured, and seems physically okay; but she's been skulking among several hidey-holes all weekend and not eating or drinking much. Crazy cat. Hopefully she'll get over it. Meanwhile Princess has been enjoying the relative peace and quiet.

... apparently Thursday is the day to go to the gym.

Lots of empty parking spots, choice of treadmills, didn't have to wait for any machines, and the music was OUTSTANDING. I even jogged a bit to Squeeze's "Hourglass".

And there's dragon boat practice this Saturday. Finally!

Dragon boat races in Long Beach were this past weekend. Our team got bumped up into a harder division. We were, as they say, Not Prepared. Several of our races were agonizingly close, but we came home with no medals. Oh well, time to up our game, or whatever the kids are calling it.

Home internet connection is working. Small projects getting done, some boxes unpacked, still haven't found the cutlery drawer insert or the main cutlery stash so we're living out of the dish drainer for a few things. Found both salt shakers finally, so at least breakfast will return to normal soon.

Getting used to this not-having-a-dishwasher thing again. 9-minute commute is also not bad. (I got the commute down to 7 minutes this morning by getting on the freeway. NOT worth it!)

All the utilities are set up. WoW works. My guildies know I'm alive again.

Time to go hunting through more boxes now...

My day

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] stuartc somehow managed to convince me that I *reeeaallllly* want an iPhone. Cut because it got kinda long. ) Can't sleep, iPhones will eat me...

Saturday was dragon boat practice. The race is in just over a month so our fearless leaders are pushing us a bit more. I stopped by the realtor on the way back to drop off one signed thing and pick up another thing to sign. Then I made the mistake of opting for the scenic route home. I'm trying to not get so irked with heavy traffic, but there were several points where it was so backed up we had to sit at green lights, which is apparently where I draw the line.

Later [livejournal.com profile] stuartc and I dropped in on D. and M. that we used to work with. They have a nice, if small, place in Santa Monica. We met their kitties and they gave us boxes. (The lads did, not the cats.) We tried to go to Costco to buy more boxes but they were already closed, which was a shame as I also needed (and now even more desperately need) to put fuel in the car and I would have preferred to do so cheaply.

Sunday started out as a relatively normal day in that we did NOT have to do any realtor things, and we did NOT get up early. Sadly the voice of reason (my husband) insisted it was time to start packing boxes. Have I mentioned lately that we have way too much stuff?

There was a little WoW in there too, but I am still nowhere near level 70.

Also I have been taking lots and lots of Advil, as I was already sore from dragon boating before I even started slinging boxes around.

Saturday I went to dragon boat practice for the first time this season. (There was practice the previous weekend, but I was under strict orders from the periodontist not to undertake strenuous exercise at the time, so I slept instead.)

Practice was actually a lot MORE fun than I remembered it being. I guess it's so early in the season, we don't want to scare off the newbies just yet. (-: Also I spent the last 1/3 of the session calling instead of paddling, so I'm only about 2/3 as sore as I really should be.

People seemed to have a really good time even when I was yelling at them. A couple of people said I'm a really good caller! I graciously thanked them and explained that I like bossing people around. (-:

Yesterday I was a bit sore. I think I may actually be more sore today, or at least more stiff. I'm aching pretty much all over, which I suppose means I must be doing it right.
