Leaving the house
Feb. 5th, 2026 09:16 amBorrowing a page from a local introvert friend: Without some outside impetus, it honestly does not occur to me to leave the house.
Luckily, yesterday I was planning on going to the 2:00 open knit/craft session at the local yarn shop, and the aforementioned friend texted to say she was going to the 5:30 session. My brain defaulted to "go out, come back, go out again" when Mr Diane sensibly pointed out I could just go out and stay out.
So in no particular order, yesterday I:
socialized
had tea
got a TON done on my out-and-about stitching project
went to the library
chatted with my friend who works at the library
am now on HER list for a Friday museum outing Real Soon Now (tm)
told several people about the upcoming Paul Simon concert & am assembling a MASSIVE posse for same
went to the quilting store, chatted with the owner about hand quilting, bought supplies for same
browsed at Goodwill (did not buy anything)
shopped at Ocean State Job Lot (bought a purple sweatshirt and some almonds which I ate in the car)
accidentally happened on a not-normally-scheduled movie night at the yarn shop
petted the shop dog (Winston) lots
had cake
had random potluck foods brought by folks who DID know about movie night
sang along to Wicked For Good
and somehow utterly failed to send a postcard to a work friend for his kid's school (they're trying to get a postcard from every state)
Why am I sitting inside playing WoW again?

Getting used to the retired life, maybe
Jan. 24th, 2026 10:13 amIt's been a bit over a month, and retirement is finally (maybe) starting to feel bigger than a massive extra-long weekend. There are still days where we do basically nothing but play World of Warcraft and snooze on the couch; but we're moving forward on the bathroom remodel, we're planning trips, and we're getting out of the house on a fairly regular basis.
Sigh, the bathroom.... it seems like the fixtures know their days are numbered. I never got around to regrouting around the shower; so of course that's now leaking water into the basement. The toilet has gone from "you have to flush it right" to running constantly. Who knows what mayhem the sink will come up with.
The cats are healthy as little horses. The yard is presumably still there; it's under a foot of snow at the moment, with more to come. The EV is cute and zippy and somewhat less efficient when it's f---ing cold.
I still need to set up the craft room for actual sewing. Cross stitch projects and library books continue apace. Here, have some work-in-progress pics.

Week 1 of doing nothing
Dec. 19th, 2025 01:04 pmTuesday I went to yoga. Wednesday I went to the "open knit" at the yarn store in town & started a new cross stitch(*). Thursday I did NOT go to free yoga at the library, because it was insanely nice out, so Mr Diane and I went hiking. Today I had a Zoom call with an old work friend.
Next week things in the big world will slow down due to the holiday. Next Friday we're having some friends over for Boxing Day, so there will be a great deal of snack prep and the concomitant cleaning-up.
I suspect my "doing nothing" is not the same as everyone else's "doing nothing", but why be normal?
(*) This is my "out and about" cross stitch project. It involves only whole stitches, is very high contrast, and as such does not require a ton of brainpower or super-good light. Most of all, it does not have any "difficult bits" so the odds that I will actually finish it are extremely high.
I'm doing the Autumn installment of an art nouveau set from about 2003. Unfortunately it was originally designed using Anchor threads and the DMC conversion is not very good. Two of the shades of yellow are basically identical, so I've been working on a substitution and may yet redo Spring. If I start redoing things I have a similar complaint about 2 of the shades of green in Summer... and should probably also use higher-quality fabric (I'm using a piece of Charles Craft aida which is shockingly badly off-grain).
Come to think of it I did also buy some stuff at the quilt shop on Wednesday (Q-snap extenders and a skein of DMC 973 which turns out the be ENTIRELY unsuited for the hoped-for purpose). I also tried but failed to score a smaller embroidery hoop (haven't seen my 8" q-snaps WHICH ARE PERFECT FOR THIS PROJECT since I moved). So the new project is living in an 11" q-snap square for the moment which is not ideal.

I spent a little time cross stitching
Nov. 2nd, 2025 09:42 amI got to start a new color!
Is white a colour?
Will I ever decided which spelling of "color" I prefer?
Should I be using 3 strands instead of 2?
Am I going to use glow-in-the-dark thread in this project? NO!
Anyway. That's all the trees finished on the right-hand side. And a noticeable start on the moon.

Deer Trail is finished!

Pattern is from the book Cross Stitch In The Forest. I foolishly thought, “This is just 4 colors! It should be simple. And I can use threads from my stash!”
Dear reader, it was not so. One 123stitch order for DMC 988 and more 989, hours of eyestrain from working on dark fabric, and about a billion three-quarter stitches later, I can confidently state that I HAVE NOT LEARNED A THING and intend to start Upon A Star (the one with the wolf and the moon) pretty much any second now.
Bullet journal stuff
Dec. 29th, 2024 10:23 pmI can't remember who I was chatting with about bullet journaling. So here you all go!
This is the monthly tracker section for January. This year's notebook is a bit larger than previous ones, and I've gone from 2 pages per month to 4. We'll see what sticks.
Similar trackers to last year, plus a bit that might get doodles or stickers. (On the layout test page it says "LOOK at all this SPACE" lol.)

New for this year, project-specific tracking and a bingo card of random shit I should do more.

I got this notebook from Cognitive Surplus and it's kinda gigantic. Also IT'S SO PRETTY. Here it is with some micron pens and what used to be the full set of Zebra Mildliner markers:

Recent stitching
Dec. 8th, 2024 03:20 pmI got through all of the easy, light-colored stitching on the Halloween Mill Hill kit. Now it's a gothic nightmare of dark (everything) on black. I may end up putting it away until spring when there's more light.

Today I had a brainwave and realized that I could take these 3 finished Christmas Pusheen cross stitches and turn them into something suitable for hanging on the tree! For backing, I have some scrap fabric that is a lovely festive red. Unfortunately getting the sewing machine out is a hassle so (in my wisdom) I decided to try hand sewing. It's a bit of a slog. But I haven't drawn blood yet so I've got that going for me.

Cross stitch progress
Oct. 19th, 2024 01:45 pmI got (most of) the purples done. I discovered some dark purple just below the bits I've finished. I also did quite a bit of nigh-indistinguishable pastels. Then I started doing dark brown on black and vowed never to complain about pastels again:

Now comes the black on black. There are some black stitches here, I swear there are. This is going to take a really long time.

quilt block 5 (of 9)
Sep. 10th, 2023 09:55 pmWhoof. These are getting harder.
The original planned layout:

An alternative layout:

I went with the second layout (approximately), here it is finished (ruler for scale):

Given that it needed 4 colors, of the ones I had, this was going to be obnoxiously loud no matter what. I struggled, especially at the end. On the last seam, one of the previous seams flipped its direction (on the underside, of course, so I didn't see it) causing me to have to sew through rather more layers of fabric than anticipated. I broke my top thread on the first go, forced it through on the second go. There's also a bit of a pucker on one of the blobby purple bits on the final seam. I have decreed it to be Good Enough because (a) I can't see the pucker from 4 feet away, and (b) will you LOOK at those POINTS.
Unlike the previous blocks which all came out a tad smaller than the intended 12.5" on a side, this one seems to be a smidge larger?? I was pretty tired by the end of it(*) so I may have been measuring wrong. I will deal with that another day.
(*) honestly I was pretty tired and short of brain when I started. I'm impressed I made a thing at all.

Quilt progress has resumed. I am probably more than half done with block 4 of the tutorial. But one of the half square triangles came out a bit small. I may have to redo. Luckily not the one where I'm worried about running out of the fabric.

Edited to add: I finished it! I decided to live life on the (short) edge and just deal with the slightly-too-small block later, when I do the sashing.
Not too shabby - I'm mostly pleased with the points.

I got Block 3 done, in a single day! I'm somewhat surprised that it's pretty much square, AND pretty much exactly the same size as the first two.

They do get harder after this. But I think I'm getting decently good at this so far.
P.S. I was briefly bummed that I didn't think to cut the aqua so the directional pattern would all go the same way. But I think I like this better - it has kind of a swirly water thing going on.

Quilt block 2 - much faster
Aug. 13th, 2023 09:17 pmAfter messing up and cutting a set of 3.5" x 4.5" rectangle instead of 4.5" squares, I got the cutting-out part done reasonably quickly. I changed my rotary cutter blade because I was having some trouble cutting 3 layers. It turns out it was more of an awkward-angle problem, but it never hurts to be sure.
I improvised a design board from a lap desk and the sashing fabric to check the layout.

I sewed the block together and it's just about square! 2 of my points are perfect, the other 2 are a bit off (less than 1/8").

Here are block 1 & block 2 together. Wow the lighting in this entire house is terrible.

I'm on the internet!
May. 29th, 2022 06:16 pmMy workplace is doing a series of human-interest videos about employees and our hobbies. They featured me and my cross stitch obsession!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlNXT-yQHC8
I'm impressed they managed to make a video of me where I could stand watching the rough cuts. :D
On the other hand, this reminds me that I have an Instagram and I should post about 1000000000 things to it. Or any things, honestly.
On the other other hand, wow my craft room is a mess.
On the fourth hand (rapidly running out of hands), my crafting table is now clear because of this, so yay!
