I finally emailed The Register about an IT-related topic.

(I had difficulty taking this story seriously after the opening line referred to "ten years of the net". Kids these days! No sense of history...)

That's terrible! You'll have them thinking that there are people who read El Reg for more than BOFH!

Today is "that" mailing list's 20th birthday.

We had no candles, but lots of flaming.

Well, my own Website (http://home.earthlink.net/~oy/) was established on 1 April 1995, so the last ten years are all that matter, really.

But seriously, in terms of commercial and/or hobbyist use, the World Wide Web at least has been feasible for about a decade, so in that sense, isn't it all that matters? Not everyone had access to ARPA-DARPA-CARPA-whatevARPA, you know.

I was complaining about the "blink" tag in 1994. There goes that nice round number...

Besides, I had a guest account (from [livejournal.com profile] madbodger, I believe) back in the mid-80s for email and news. Not only did it helpfully say "You have new mail" when appropriate, that was way back when it still bothered saying "There is news".

Oh for the low-volume days of yore...

In 1993/1994, I gave a short lecture to the folks at my software company about a couple of new network information protocols called WAIS, gopher, and one that was just starting up called HTML/HTTP. Back then, the first two were much more common.

What do you mean "low-volume days of yore..."? Twenty years ago, I had to delete all of my incoming email each day because of the 100+ incoming emails from the one mailing list I was on (I forget if it was 'kin or the other list) was exceding my account limits.

Well, *my* days of yore were lower volume than the current days. I didn't fall into the wrong crowd (email-wise) until around 1991 or so...
