We are in sunny southern California. It is July. There are so many perfect, ripe, fresh tomatoes in our garden that they probably outweigh us.

WHY, then, is it impossible to get a decent tomato on one's burger or salad when buying lunch out??

Because they buy their tomatoes from jobbers who get them in bulk, not from farmer's markets or nice folks like you, but from Florida, and they had a bad bad crop last year due to the weather.

Here in NC, the stores have contracts with the suppliers that prevent them from also buying locally.

which is why i don't relish eating them in restaurants. when i lived back east, this time of year, when you went to see friends, you were given or gave tomatoes to get them the hell out of your house. there were pounds of them!!! and all of them tasted great.

Don't worry, we'll save you some -- it's not like we're going to run out any time soon. The trick will be remembering to bring the,.

Your earlier comment reminds me of an anecdote... I once heard of a community where the only time anyone ever locked their cars was when they went to church in the summer, to prevent their neighbours from leaving big bags on zucchini on the seat. See, it's not just tomatoes. (-:

Because ripe tomatos don't travel well, and ones picked unripe do not really ripen. In principle, they could buy ripe tomatos from local suppliers, but they'd cost two or three times as much, and the customers don't care that much.
