Date: 2005-05-10 04:42 am (UTC)Standing next to him in an elevator, I learned a bit from him about nuclear blasts. As a young soldier, he was a test subjects at one of the above ground bomb test. He ducked to avoid the flying debris from the initial blast as the air rushed away from the blast, but unlike the soldiers next to him, he stayed down because after explosion pushes the air away, the heat from the blast causes air to rise (think of the shape of a mushroom cloud) and it then sucks the air back so there are two wave fronts, the initial one of air going out, and a second one of air rushing back.
Once at a con, I saw him sitting alone during an autograph session, so I quickly bought one of his books and then asked him to autograph it.
