Well,
stuartc and I took the plunge... on Saturday we went to look for rescue kitties. The first place that was supposed to have cat adoptions on didn't. The second place had adult cats (it's apparently not kitten season; like it ever gets too cold for kittie nookie in LA?!), and the rescue people interrogated us as if we were naughty children, which was more than a bit off-putting. Oh yes, and none of the cats they had with them were actually available for adoption, apparently. Sigh. Onwards to the shopping mecca of Santa Monica, where one rescue group had a table on the (extremely crowded) 3rd Street Promenade, with some very stressed-out-looking cats and signs saying "Please don't pet the kitties". Their questionnaire (and attitude) was even worse. And again, none of the kitties on display were actually the ones up for adoption. (Or maybe they were, just not for us. It was difficult to tell.)
Finally we found our way to the awesome premises of the SPCA LA. They do have the advantage of having their own storefront in the Santa Monica Place mall; this means they have a lot more space for the cats (and rabbits; they seem to have a thing for rabbits at that location), and the animals are a lot happier and more settled. We got to meet two adorable cats (5 and 6 months old) who were TOTALLY available for adoption and we were TOTALLY allowed to play with the kitties and get to know them.
Best of all, the SPCA people treated us like the responsible adults that we are. (Or at least, self-sufficient humans who are willing and able to care for cats in the proper manner, before anyone ruptures their spleen laughing at the concept of us as "responsible adults".) They were absolutely thrilled that we wanted to adopt not one but TWO of their cats (whereas the other cat people had treated us with what seemed the deepest of suspicion). I thanked the SPCA people for their refreshing and helpful attitude when we went back on Sunday to sign the paperwork...
... for lo, the Cat Gods have approved of us! We are about to become the proud parents of Nunu (a cute grey-and-white long-haired female; she's 5 months and the smaller of the two) and Charcoal (an unimaginatively-named black male). We have of course spent TONS of money on the best possible cat beds and cat climbing tree and covered litter box and cat drinking fountain and scratching post and toys and adorable little kitty collars. Nearly all of the cat paraphernalia we purchased is blue, which means it automatically goes with everything else in the house: bonus! [And soon enough, everything else in the house will go with it, by virtue of being covered with cat hair. But that's okay!]
It was pretty comical walking down Second Street with a 5-foot tall cat tree. (I can say this, because I wasn't the one carrying it.)
Yay! At last, indoor cats to be owned by, who understand about litter boxes. And toys. Poor Nibbler isn't going to know what happened... We're really hoping he'll just get along with them 'cause they're so small and harmless. We'll see. If not, we'll obviously keep feeding him and his psycho pals outdoors.
