further thoughts
May. 5th, 2006 01:25 pmFurther thoughts on this post (exercise, not diet, blah blah blah)...
1. The study shows correlation, which as we all know is NOT causation. I'm waiting for the controlled studies of human volunteers where people change their activity levels and see what actually happens.
1b. It would be a shame if the active, trim monkeys just had some innate characteristic that makes them both active and less likely to get fat.
2. On the other hand, wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if we've been running around like headless chickens for the past few decades over ENTIRELY the wrong issue? "Calories are all evil!" "Fat is evil!" "Sugar is evil!" "Protein is evil!" (Okay, I made that last one up.) I think it would be really funny if all of that turns out not to matter.

Garbage in, Garbage out. Exercise just speeds this up.

Date: 2006-05-05 09:27 pm (UTC)"A study showed blah blah blah". I'm happy for them.
There's (usually) SOME truth in the study but I never take them as gospel truth cause what if there are factors that the study doesn't mention (the monkeys are prone to being slim and being active?).

Date: 2006-05-05 09:56 pm (UTC)They compared a bunch of stuff like diets, level of exercise, lifestyle and such, and found that the group in Boston, while having much the same diet and lifestyle as the folks in Ireland, had a much higher average weight (and, IIRC, incidence of heart attack).
The only real difference was that the amount of excercise the Ireland group reported was much higher. Walking more, rather than driving everywhere.
I also know that r_ness always comes back from traveling a few pounds lighter than he started out. Lots of walking and carrying luggage.
Obviously I should travel more. :-)

Travel is sometimes a little TOO broadening. There was that Maui trip where my parents were paying for hotel food 3 meals a day... the banana macadamia nut waffles (with coconut syrup) were to die for. I came dangerously close to having to wear a muumuu for the flight home.
