There was a LINE!

ok, there were like 4 people in front of me, 2 of whom were in the wrong line. And one neurotic guy behind me worrying about the line. And no line when I left. It counts. :P

I voted "Yes" on a shocking number of initiatives.

Go go gadget democracy! And go, go the end of political spam for another short while.

If all the initiatives you voted for pass, how will life in California change?

Labeling for GMO foods - failed.

Repeal the death penalty - failed - WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!

Modify CA's idiotic "3 strikes" law to be slightly less idiotic - Passed.

Multi-state corporations will have to pay a more sensible share of taxes in CA - Passed.

The death penalty things seems weird. Are there any other civilised countries that still have the death penalty?

The death penalty thing is insane. I object to your implication that the US is a civilised country.

This article has a pretty good explanation of how the California ballot got to this point, and is an entertaining read:

(I have no idea who the heck Kevin Drum is, but I found myself agreeing with him on pretty much everything.)

Depending on your definition of civilized, Japan also does.

Of course one definition of a civilized country (necessary but not sufficient, perhaps) is somewhere the state no longer kills people in cold blood.

Even the Japanese don't execute those convicted of crimes that occurred when they were under 18 (last I saw the US is one of a very few places that do that, along with Iran and Saudi Arabia - good company in theocracies, then).

Japan's history (and still ongoing problem) with suicide possibly ties in to the accpetance of capital punishment.
