I feel totally overwhelmed and inadequate as a bass player.

Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated, down to and including, "Oh come on, remember how bad you guys sounded this time last year?"

Thanks.

Anything Rick Neilsen ever had his hands on is significantly more difficult than it first sounds.

Even among guitar players, he was known for writing songs which were easy to sing and almost impossible to play.

The bass line was not spared from this.

Thank you! Jeeze, it sounds so easy.

I am at least inspired to do my homework now. And either go pick shopping, or remember what the hell I did with those purple picks I bought years and years ago before I was told, "Oh no no no, you don't use a pick to play bass!" Argh.

You can play Clapton and you still feel inadequate? Puh-lease! :)

(1) This is not a Clapton composition; it was written by a committee. He just performed it.

(2) Who said I can actually play this song? The word "blundering" comes to mind.

(3) I was standing next to Dan. Of course I felt inadequate.

I really must learn the distinction between "inferior" and "inadequate". I know in my head that I can be inferior to the maestro and still be up to the task at hand. But I can't seem to internalize the concept.

The great avant garde guitarist David Torn once said something that has stuck with me ever since. He said that no matter where your playing exists on a technical level, you always have the tools that you need to tell a story and what you should focus on is just what story it is you're going to tell.

Hey, I've never heard you play, and I know you rock. It's not like it's a Who/Entwhistle piece with arpeggios and 64th notes and bass chords...

Get angry; you're beautiful and talented when you're angry. Divide and conquer.
