Man! These songs are HARD! Whiiiiiine. (-:

I got the main riff from "Play That Funky Music White Boy". At speed. I think I hurt myself. I volunteered to take on the high backing vocals for "Drive My Car". I think someone ELSE is going to hurt me over that. And the last time we train-wrecked on "Tightrope" it was because the drummer was following ME. Whoops.

Homework time!

If you know the line for "Play That Funky Music", you can do any funk song from the late 60s on, and several songs from the 80s and 90s that follow that same basic form (Tom Tom Club, etc.) Obviously, the white boys did not invent it, but it's the same riff - different songs are variations on the theme.

Yep. My mental process went something like this:

1. Holy crap! I don't know how to play this!
2. Dan's hands are full. I can't hand him the bass. Damn!
3. Okay. that's an E...
4. Okay. that's the other E, an octave up, and that's a D just below it.
5. Okay, this goes REALLY FAST. So it must be something super easy to actually play.
6. Yay! It's those two fingers. Problem solved.

Heh. If the drummer was following YOU...I don't think the homework's all on your side.

FWIW, I once led an entire band astray myself, including the director. It was after a long series of rests -- I lost count and came in too soon. So did the rest of the band. After the song was over, and we all asked, "What happened?" one of trombones said something like, "We followed you 'cause you came in with such authority."

I may be wrong, but I'm certain. ;-)

Excellent story!

I believe it was Robert Fripp and the league of, umm, something or other who had the motto, "If we don't know where we're going, we usually get there."
