Few things are less dignified than a 40-year old woman driving with the windows down in February[*], "Rock Lobster" cranked up on the radio, singing along and doing the car dance.

Luckily I am old enough to not care. If I had kids, they would be SO embarrassed by me.

[*] Okay, it's February in Torrance. It's 60 degrees F... half the populace is still running around in down jackets shivering.

I've been doing a lot of driving between home and Dunfermline lately. Iron Maiden has been my solace on those journeys - I like it LOUD and I like the windows down too :-)

I have found a lovely new(ish) radio station that plays completely random songs. Sometimes it's rubbish but frequently it's quite good fun.

They don't have DJs. Instead they have recorded voice snippets between songs. Most are harmless blurbs such as "93.1 Jack FM - Playing what we want!" but every now and then they are more random and amusing. My favourite so far: "If you just said 'What the hell was that?' out loud, say this out loud: '93.1 Jack FM'!"

(Where was I going with that? Oh yes...) I find the radio is actually more likely to cheer me up than if I put on a CD, just because of the elements of randomness and surprise. Having said that, some of the mix CDs I make for band research are pretty random, so those work well sometimes too. But generally, music doesn't cheer me up as well unless it sneaks up on me.

The "Jack" format - yes, it's a format - is actually meant to mimic shuffle mode on an iPod. True.

So. Cal. has a habit of inducing that. Last time I was there, I screamed down the street from Anaheim near the Crush all the way into Fullerton, in a rented car with the window down, insanebopping to the Femmes' "Add It Up"...

The General Manager of "Jack FM" is, believe it or not, a close friend of my nephew, who is GM of KTWV-FM, 94.7 The Wave. And Dan told me at Thanksgiving that he thinks it's a terrific format. Oh well, room for all sorts of opinion in my big family....

And your big friends list... sorry... (-:

I like the randomness. I like the lack of wittering DJs -- shock horror, I can actually listen to MUSIC instead of some dreadful Morning Show. And I can't help it... I like the music. (Much of it, anyway. Some of it is head-clutchingly bad.)

Yeah, it says that it's 61F outside here in El Segundo, but it felt quite chilly and windy on my walk to lunch! Brrr!

I still love 61F way over 32F or 0F though... :)

I do have kids. They sing along with me in the car. Their mother doesn't let them sing in the car when she's driving. Their mother doesn't let me sing in the car when she's driving.

They're not teens yet, right? Give them a few years...
