Keep your eyes open, be aware of your surroundings at all times, don't sit or stand with your back to a doorway or window, and take advantage of any opportunity to get the drop on them.
I would also like to state for the record that I did NOT fall off of The Shoes at any point in the evening. There were a couple of moments where it was close, though.
