Okay, I don't normally rant about UK politics. I'm not from there, and I'm not even living there at the moment. But FFS, Tony Blair can be so thick sometimes!

From Ananova we get the excellently summed up news item:
Blair: Anti-yob measures no gimmick
"Council leaders in 40 new "Respect" areas have been warned they no longer have any excuse for failing to take action against yobs."

Yeah, RIGHT! Because the whole problem is that the COUNCILS aren't taking action. Of course! Silly us. Why didn't we think of that?! Gosh Mister Blair, we'll get on that right away.

Here's my modest proposal: I think politicians who say such idiotic things should be sentenced to live in the problem areas themselves, for up to 6 months per stupid thing said. This has the potential to make the world a better place in such a variety of ways!

Unless you're going to recommend eating babies, you should refrain from using the phrase "modest proposal" :)

Ludicrous, isn't it? And when you look at the list of "Respect" areas they happen to include almost every major city in the UK.

As a British citizen I feel that society is failing to 'respect' me and people like me by dumbing down broadcasting, by being excessively politically correct and by the failure of the police and the NHS. Is Tony Bleurgh doing anything about that? Is he hell!

If by "people like me" you mean "people with brains," I have some bad news for you about democracy.

How about now? Can we go live on Mars and leave these dunderheads to their own destruction *now*?!??

I know, democracy is the rule of the thought-free masses.

Hmm... maybe we could persuade everyone else to go to Mars - the climate change we're suffering here would be a great first step towards terraforming the place. Earth could then recover quietly. And we might lose millions on the journey...

Naaa... I'm with you. Let's go to Mars and leave them to it. We won't bother democracy, we can implement Stuart's rational anarchy instead.

Lord Dunsany, in his If I Were Dictator, came up with many gems. One of these was that every politician was entitled to have a statue of himself put up in a public place, the costs to be wholly paid for by the government -- under the condition that his opponents would be the ones who got to choose what quote he would be remembered with.
