The World of Warcrack trading card game is out.

We bought the Inglewood GameStop out of boosters, among other purchases.

Doomed, we are both so doomed....

So far so good. I've survived the stage of "Hey, I've got a mage starter deck and a bunch of mage cards, let's call it a deck and see what happens" and am about to embark on Actual Deck Construction.

(Nerf druids, by the way.)

Huh. Hadn't even heard of it. Here I was, figuring it at least wouldn't jump the shark until the expansion came out. Ah well. RIP, WoW.

So, what exactly is meant by "jump the shark," anyway?

Please pardon my ignorance, I was out of the country for a couple of years and I seem to have missed some key vocabulary building. I gather you think this is going to kill WoW, and I'm curious what makes you think so.

The slang term "jump the shark" was popularized by http://www.jumptheshark.com, and refers to the point at which something that was once good, not only goes bad, but does so beyond possible redemption. The canonical example is from the TV show "Happy Days", when the character of Fonzie jumped a shark, on water skis.

The gencon article I saw mentioned codes on the cards for things in game... provided it's for fluff items, not a problem, but once the mechanism is in place, I don't see why they wouldn't keep raising the bar until choice equipment is only available by buying collectible cards, instead of through, oh here's a crazy thought, playing the game.

'Jump the shark' refers to an episode of that "great american classic" Happy Days. The ep where Fonzie jumped his motorcycle over a tank of water in the parking lot at Arnold's. The tank held a shark.

It signals the point at which an endeavor, show, whatever has gone just a bit to far and is forever on a downward slope following the incident. There is even a website (who woulda thunk it on the Internet) where different shows are rated for their Jump The Shark moments.

Just in case you wanted to know.
