Date: 2006-04-03 06:08 am (UTC)On the other hand, on my last night while at a fannish gathering in a pub I did get to see a genuine Irish bar fight. I was about to make my good nights due to a ridiculously early flight when, in a bar room which seated perhaps 40 people total, suddenly there was the noise of a bottle breaking and the shout "You stay away from my wife!". Wasn't anyone in the gathering, but at a nearby table. Where the bottle had apparently been broken over a patron's head. There was a bit more yelling, and then the newcomers left. I was advised to stay another 10-15 minutes to be sure they didn't jump me by mistake as I left. Was right next to a very reasonably priced and excellent fish and chips place that is apparently a must stop for any rock musician that visits Dublin.
The other particularly notable Dublin bit was that on a bus travelling to the airport through downtown between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, I saw many more drunks and not as drunk people weaving their way home on foot from partying as I have ever seen at that hour in any major city, including Manhattan.
