If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised what people remember about you

Hidden DRM code's legitimacy questioned - In the name of content protection, Sony music CDs are installing a nasty little "rootkit" that hides itself, intercepts system calls, and can render a PC unusable if you try to remove it.

Warcraft game maker in spying row - WoW installs a program that keeps an eye on you and makes sure you're not using third-party "cheat" programs. (It's unclear what the "row" is here, considering nobody actually seems to be unhappy with the situation, including most players.)

So of course some clever people immediately put two and two together...

World of Warcraft hackers using Sony BMG rootkit to hide their cheating activities! Well, that was going to happen, wasn't it?

I predict, next up: Blizzard sues Sony, film at 11. (Time to play "Let's you and him fight"!)

I don't normally read anything by Tech Columnist Bill Thompson. Today I was reminded of why:

The rootkit of all evil?

RANT ON

I get as far as "... the licence agreement on the CDs were explicit about what was being installed ..." No, you moron, the license agreement WAS.

Then I get to "If you have got a Mac or a Linux box then you can play and even copy you disc happily, because the real WAV files that a CD player uses are there on the disc."

Audio CDs do not use WAV files! What the hell is wrong with you people?!?! (And that was a straight copy-and-paste. The person who allowed "you disc" through needs to be fed to angry bears.)

RANT OFF

If this article has a point, I will never know what it is. I cannot read any more of this. (Yay! There's work to do!!)

Fit fit fits.
You will perish of fits. Repeat this to yourself:
"Things can work out even if I don't get
my way. Things can work out even...."
