Well, that was odd.

For the past several mornings, one of the cats (we suspect Princess) has been waking us up at 6 AM with forlorn and incessant meowing.

This morning, there was no meowing that I can remember, but stuartc and I both woke up at 6 anyway.

Either there's some outside thing going on that provokes the meowing (and also wakes us up), or else she's got us trained...

Let's start with the obvious: what time does the sun rise at your longitude within the time zone?

Then more subtle: what kind of suburban wildlife do you have out there? We have coyotes, and the raccoons are making a come-back. (Skunks are wholly nocturnal, so it's probably not them, unless they're returning to a nest near your house and the cats are hearing them.)

It is still almost entirely dark at 6 AM. (For a while she was also waking us up at 3 AM with the meowing, but either that has stopped or I'm getting back to sleep each time so I don't remember it.)

It might be the squirrels. Or possibly the neighbours. I think the guy who lives on that side is a building contractor of some sort, so he may be up and loading things into his truck at 6 AM.
