I don't normally read anything by Tech Columnist Bill Thompson. Today I was reminded of why:

The rootkit of all evil?

RANT ON

I get as far as "... the licence agreement on the CDs were explicit about what was being installed ..." No, you moron, the license agreement WAS.

Then I get to "If you have got a Mac or a Linux box then you can play and even copy you disc happily, because the real WAV files that a CD player uses are there on the disc."

Audio CDs do not use WAV files! What the hell is wrong with you people?!?! (And that was a straight copy-and-paste. The person who allowed "you disc" through needs to be fed to angry bears.)

RANT OFF

If this article has a point, I will never know what it is. I cannot read any more of this. (Yay! There's work to do!!)

Not to mention "have got".

Eh, it's a British colloquialism. Given the generally folksy, chatty nature of the column (which is another reason I don't normally read it), I'm willing to let that pass.

Good grammar (and not just in advertising) has went. (Who here will recognize that specific reference?) I've often suggested that the Internet be declared a sort of virtual Dogpatch, since many of the post-literate generation simply use the incorrect homophones whenever they wish. Thus, "there," "their," and "they're" are used practically interchangeably. Then why not simply use "yore" instead of "your" or "you're"? And so on, tiresomely downward.

And moments after I posted, I read another FL'er post remarking on how a Pakistani village was "decimated" by the recent Kashmiri earthquake. Sigh, another word, the specific meaning of which has been et up and spat out as a result of massive incorrect usage.

I'm willing to put up with that sort of nonsense in something like LJ, where it's just thee and me complaining about life. Apparently the BBC are actually paying this wanker.
