The software revision control system. Alas, if it were the pharmacy chain, I might at least have the option of trying a different one. (-:
I begin to suspect that the problem is not so much CVS itself, as my failure to grasp the intricacies of the documentation. However, I'm having the same trouble as I did with the bass tabs last week, to wit the continuing urge to scream out loud "What sane person would DO that?!"
I've avoided doing this out loud in the middle of the office. So far.
CVS is horrible. I used to think that all my problems with CVS were due to my not fully understanding its subtleties and intricacies. I've since learnt better: CVS is fundamentally broken. The best you can hope for is to avoid the sharp edges, shards of glass, and ejection seat trigger; if you manage to get any work done in the process consider it a bonus.
Ten years ago of course CVS was state of the art, but these days there are so many better choices out there that there's really no excuse for it anymore. At the very least, someone at your shop ought look into Subversion, which is targeted at CVS addicts who want an easy upgrade path to something that "sucks less".
CVS?
