I almost did a phone post, but there was no signal in the basement. (yes, I really almost did a phone post of Team Greykell singing at the team talent show)
The "other" box isn't big enough :). There are other photo hosting services you can get for free, but I like this one, and since I'm always logged in to LJ, I don't have to go somewhere else when I want to play with pictures. Having the extra links means I can get to all the LJ functions I want to use from my own "recent posts" page, rather than having to go back to a page with a menu on it. I also have a custom mood theme, and occasionally the "friends of friends" page is enlightening.
I picked "other" because "It seems only fair to pay for it" didn't quite fit; I pay for it because I think LJ is cool and I want to support it. I don't think it's unfair to use it without paying, and I'm glad folks without the money to spare can still use it.
I should also add to my "other", I like not having to wonder if I get the groovy new features which come out from time to time. Whenever something comes out, I have access to it.
And I do mean to eventually set up phone posting. It's such a great idea for emergencies.
None of the paid options you list sound compelling.
Features I find useful include the ScrapBook photo hosting, options for embedding journals in web pages, customising styles, domain forwarding, 'Friends of Friends', popular users among friends, creating syndicated accounts and the Express Lane.
Oh, and LJ is cheap considering how much I use it.
