My hair is, and has been for some time, desperately in need of a trim. As part of my ongoing mid-life crisis, I am actually contemplating whether to get some sort of hairstyle imposed at the same time.

I shall almost certainly keep it long, after all this effort; but am considering bangs or some sort of layering or shaping in order to improve the incidence of good hair days.

Suggestions, as ever, will be entertained. Points will be awarded for best and worst suggestions. Anything involving dyeing or maintenance is quite unlikely at this time. (Yes, I know I look good in purple.)

Perm!

Go for a perm! You could more than double the spherical volume of your head!

(And why do they call it a "perm" when it's obviously a "temp"?)

You really don't want me to get out The Perm Story From When I Was Ten, do you? [Traumatic, stinky, and didn't even work.] Besides, my head is inhumanly large already...

Maybe so, but so far I'm the only entrant for both "best" and "worst" categories.

Besides, I had my hair permed from 1983 to 1988. I looked like some of the cooler portraits of Beethoven. Except with a moustache (the beard came later).

Plan A: I don't recall the texture of your hair, nor the natural wave, but judging by my recollection and your icon piccie, it would seem that a rounded layer effect would be good, to the effect that from the back it looks shortest at the shoulder, and gradually increases length towards the middle of your back. When cut well it forms an almost elliptical shape... This is obviously best with straight or only moderately wavy hair that tends to lie flat. This cut looks good pulled up, as then a piece can fall on the side of your face like an extra long fringe which can be pinned or tucked behind your ear. I'm not into fringes, as they make the head look bigger and the face look smaller. Plus eyes should be the "centre" of your face, and not your nose! I had a similar cut forever, and found that as long as it was clean and combed, it worked.

Plan B: Go to one of those cha cha places in Beverly Hills and have them take a digi picture of you and pair it with what suits your face. [Having said that, I'd be honest and say an a-line bob just below the ear would suit your face the best...]

Thanks for the suggestions! Here's the thing about fringes: I seem to have a giant mutant forehead, especially when my hair is pulled back. (Yes, I've been looking at dragon boating pictures again. And despairing.) I swear my hairline is receding! So anything to disguise the giant forehead could only be a Good Thing.

Wish I knew someone local with mad Photoshop skilz. I may yet get out the tracing paper and the prismacolors and play paper dolls.

Have you considered wearing a prosthetic forehead on your real head?
