... and this is me speaking up.
Work background 1: My workplace (Blizzard Entertainment) has been making much of our diversity & inclusion initiatives recently. I have been participating at a moderate level.
Work background 2: In the last few months, my department's management chain has lost both the head of the department AND the engineering lead. We have been making do with a middle manager (who has close to 40 direct reports at the moment) and a ragtag band of old-timers stepping up.
So imagine my delight when we FINALLY posted the engineering manager position to our hiring site.
.... Then imagine my delight turning to horror as I read the listing. It was a huge blob of word salad. It named two different positions between the title and the first wall of text. It had a laundry list of Absolute Requirements. It included the word "ninjas". What are we, 12 years old?
You know that position that no sensible will ever apply for because no one can possibly meet all the requirements? Add to that: The position that no one with an organized bone in their body will ever apply for, because OMG YOU PEOPLE CAN'T EVEN WRITE A JOB REQ, WHY WOULD I GO ANYWHERE NEAR THAT.
So. I approached my acting manager and said "The wording on this is terrible. We need to fix this." Next thing I know, the Word doc appears in my inbox with the directive to "go for it". So I did!
There was a bit of back-and-forth. They tried to move everything back into Required. I put my foot down and INSISTED that at least 1/3 of them had to go under Optional. They picked different ones than I had picked, but that's okay.
The new listing went up Friday afternoon. It's not perfect, but it's more inclusive and welcoming, and it is HELLA more readable. I am super proud of myself, and I am also very grateful that management and HR took the time to work with me on this, because this is important.
Here is the job listing, in case you want to admire my skills and/or want to come work for Blizzard and be my boss! https://careers.blizzard.com/en-us/openings/ogsu8fw4
P.S. If one more person tells me they appreciate my "unique perspective" I may actually cry. I am so tired of having a unique perspective. Can I please just be among my people now please?

Was that meant to be an "and", there? Also it feels like there might be an object missing at the end of the line.
I don't think I want to live in southern California, not that I'm looking particularly anyway, but one wonders what's out there sometimes. (The rest of it sounds kinda like my current job. For what it's worth, seeing "ninja" in a job ad is about when I stop reading.)
Yay for being the voice of sanity! I can appreciate wanting to be part of a chorus, though.

You should have seen the original. The ninjas were the least of my worries.

Me thinks your images need a tad bit of work.

I find it hard to imagine anyone applying to Blizzard who doesn't know the company, and what it does.
Speaking of which, what do you make of Mike Morhaime's departure?

Sure, but most people who know that, want to work on a game team. We're the supporting team formerly known as Business Intelligence (BI) until some visionary jerkface came in and renamed us and rearranged half the furniture and then left. What the hell is a Global Insights? Our department sadly does need an introduction.
(Ouch. Still mad, Diane? Yep. Still mad.)
Edited to add: At least the current listing tells a story. You should have seen the wall of word salad they originally posted.
That is super interesting and I'm still processing it. Not much has changed in our day-to-day operations. I suspect it's not really going to hit home until Blizzcon.
I can't really blame him. 27 years is a long time to be doing anything. (He's been running Blizzard for longer than some of the employees have been alive!) I do feel like JAB is a solid choice as a successor, and I'm not worried about the future of the company. There are plenty of "non game team" people they could have chosen, so I'm really glad they chose a game team person instead. If they had put in a bean-counter, or brought someone in from Activision (or outside) then a lot of people would be a lot more worried.
