dianec42: Close-up of an electric bass guitar (Bass)

Ouch! Darn it!

I managed to slice my left middle finger over the weekend (I mistook it for some cheese; long story, okay?). It's healing up all right, but more slowly than I'd like because I keep whacking into things. (Not *just* the 'w' and '2' keys when playing WoW. Really!)

What's driving me crazy right now? I *know* I was recently discussing with someone at work, that there's this super-glue-like "liquid bandage" thing you can get for putting on hard-to-bandage cuts. There was a band-related injury, so that must have been the day of the Christmas party; we were threatening to put Super Glue on it as a joke, and it turned out later that that might have actually been the right thing to do.

So, does anyone know... what is this "liquid bandage" stuff, is it any good, and where would I get some? Also, does it tend to flake off if you do stupid things like play the bass before your finger heals?

Thanks in advance, O mighty group mind!

I cut my finger in the middle of a car repair job and used a sealant spray so I could continue working. I don't recall the brand, but it was right there with the bandaids in the store. They also had medical grade super glue that should work well if there's something to be glued together. (my injury was more if a deep scrape)

I've been told that regular super glue works fine too.

My understanding (from a half-paid-attention-to Elbows thread, I think, but I'm not sure) is that the biggest (and significant) difference between medical glue and Crazy Glue is that the former is flexible. Garden-variety cyanoacrylate is pretty brittle, but worth a try anyhow -- I would try it if it were my finger, at least -- even if it has to be replaced every so often when it cracks. On a hunch, I'd say to try the "gel"-type Crazy Glue (or whatever other brand of CA). I used it for something once, and I remember for sure that it took longer to dry, but I think it was also slightly less brittle when it did dry.

How long is the cut? If it's short, regular Crazy Glue may actually hold well enough despite the brittleness.

uh.. wouldn't that be the "e" and the "3" key wouldn't it?

The only time I used liquid bandage was pretty long aga and the smell gave me a migraine.

Well, "w" is move forward, and "2" is "spam whatever the default spell or ability is", so those are the ones I use the most. (-: "e" and "3" I can generally hit with my index finger so those aren't a problem.

I believe that's what superglue was originally designed for - dealing with wounds during the Vietname war. Of course, this could just be an urban myth...

[identity profile] bedfull-o-books.livejournal.com 2006-03-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Another possible urban myth: I read about a woman who put liquid bandage on her heel and managed to glue herself to the floor (having not let it dry sufficiently).

So be careful answering the phone and such....

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superglue entry is quite intresting.

Wow. They have a link to the Straight Dope article (http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/msuperglue.html) at the end! I'm impressed.

My favorite bit in the Straight Dope article: "...he did find that cyanoacrylates would glue together many materials with incredible strength and quick action, including two very expensive prisms when he tried to test the ocular qualities of the substance."

I'm glad I don't have days like that at work. Much.

Hey Diane - you could try looking in our bathroom cabinet. We have a bottle of liquid bandage from the last time I cut my finger.. :)

The product, "New Skin," comes in both a "paint on" form (good for cuts) and a "spray on" form (good for large scrapes).

It can hurt like hell when applied, but I think it's really worth it. It's carried in most of the drug stores around here.

That's about what I was going to say. That, and don't glue your foot to the floor! (http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2004-07-21-woman-glued-floor_x.htm)

I did decide it would be bad to glue my fingers to the steering wheel. (Now... a thousand and TWO uses!)
