Quilt experiments, disappearing 9-patch

I was inspired by a recent Reddit post to try out the "disappearing 9-patch" block. It is so called because you start with a 9-patch, cut it into quarters, and then rearrange the quarters to make different interesting tessellations.

I found it interesting because, on the Reddit post, the quilt showed off some very nice prints without being too busy or loud. So I thought maybe I can use that layout for the Hawaiian shirt quilt.

I used some cheap white fabric and some lightweight batiks that were intended for / left over from the tutorial quilt project I haven't finished, may it rest in pieces. My cutting and sewing were slightly extra wonky because I'm still sick.

I also started using a tailor's clapper when pressing the seams. OMG that makes such a difference.

Pictures! As ever, click to embiggen.

First you make a 9-patch:

Then you cut it into quarters:

Then you try a layout like you saw on Reddit:

Then you realize you only made one set so you lay it out the other way so you can see how it will repeat:

Then you mess around with different layouts and find another nice one:

I am VERY pleased with the results. I think this is going to work well.
