Comments aren't getting mailed with any reliability. But if you go to the "My LJ" portal thingy, you can see the last 5 comments that you got. Yay, useful!
An even better thing to know about is the Recent Comments (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/recent_comments.bml) tool. This shows you more than "My LJ".
